Format/Picture-plane
Two-dimensional art is created within a rectangle, square, oval, circle, etc. These contained work areas/spaces are called format and are also sometimes referred to as the picture-plane.
Terms
Format: the contained space of the two-dimensional working area.
Picture-plane: a term used interchangeably with format.
The format or picture-plane can be any two-dimensional shape.
Note: the 9"x12" sketchbooks are the format for this class.
