Week 9: composition I
Design Elements: Color
The three qualities/characteristics of all colors are value, saturation, and temperature.
Value—All colors have an inherent dark and light value (i.e. they are either lighter or darker as compared to a black/white/gray value scale).
Saturation—All colors have an inherent intensity that ranges from full saturation to de-saturation (i.e. pure color to grayed-out).
Temperature—All colors have an inherent temperature of warm and cool (i.e. colors that shift towards orange are considered warm and colors that shift towards blue are considered cool).
These concepts and ideas will be addressed in ART 117—Design and Color.
Note: The term hue is used by many artists to address temperature. It comes from Albert Henry Munsell’s color theory.
