Week 9: composition I

Assignment: Compositions

Specifications

Subject matter: Flat geometric shapes.

  • Assignment 3: From your imagination, draw a minimum of 8–10 thumbnail line only compositions using the principles of design listed below. Use only the flat geometric shapes: circles, squares, rectangles, and triangles. Each thumbnail will be in a 2"x3" format, either horizontal or vertical. When doing these thumbnail exercises, be sure to first draw the format and second, create the composition.

  • When you are finished, select your two most effective compositions and the two least effective compositions. When you list your reasons on the discussion board, refer to the list below as to why you feel they are effective or ineffective:

    1. Dominant/Subordinate

    2. Repetition with variation of similar shapes

    3. Focal Point

    4. Balance

    5. Harmony/Unity

    6. Positive and negative space

    7. Overlapping shapes

    8. Golden Section

Scan and submit your thumbnail drawings and provide feedback to others on their choices. (10 points)

Assignment 4: Add value to each thumbnail composition. When you are finished, select the two most effective compositions and the two least effective compositions and list your reasons why. Note: adding value can sometimes make an ineffective line composition effective and vice versa. Post your answers on your discussion board. Provide feedback to others on their choices. (10 points)

Note: Did adding value change your opinion of which were effective 0r ineffective? Give your reasons why. Post your answers on your group discussion board.

Assignment 5: Choose one of the thumbnail compositions and draw a 9"x12" version of it. Feel free to make minor adjustments to the composition because of the increased scale. (10 points)

Size: 9"x12"

Media: Charcoal.

Deadlines

Post completed drawings by Monday 11:55 PM: Scan in and submit your completed drawing to the discussion board. I will provide feedback and a grade for each of your drawings. I will be using the following questions to help grade your drawings:

  • Are the sizes and placements pleasing?

  • Do the drawings adequately represent dominant/subordinant, golden rectangle, variation, harmony, unity, positive and negative space, shape, and overlapping?

Post responses to your group members by Tuesday 11:55 PM: Comment on your group members choices for their two effective and less effective compositions as well as their choices after they have added value to the thumbnails.
