Week 9: composition I

Design Principles:
Dominate & Subordinate

Any value, line, shape, color, or texture, in relation to the rest of the painting.

Dominance/subordinance is used more by the Savior in the creation of this planet and the universe than any other principle of design (e.g. the sun and the moon, water and land, a bishop and his counselors).

When one or more of the five elements of design are emphasized measureably more than any others, they are dominant (i.e. have the greatest visual weight, greatest number, or has the most influence).

When dominant/subordinate are used together, they create stability and order.

Subordination is simply any of the five elements that are emphasized less than the dominant ones.

Dominant & Subordinate

subordination

The dominant shape in this composition is the triangle. The subordinate shape are the two implied horizontal rectangles in the background.

The dominant color in this painting is blue. The subordinate color is orange (neutral).
