Week 13: Drawing From Life

Assignments 1-2: Drawing from Life

Specifications

Subject matter: Set up 5–7 objects that are related to each other. For example, you may choose to use objects that you would find on a dresser, in the kitchen, in a toy box, or office desk. There should be a variation in values, sizes, textures, etc. Arrange the objects so that their shapes overlap and that you have a focal point. Arrange your light source so that approximately 2/3 of the composition is lit and 1/3 is in shadow.

Set up your composition in a place that will not be disturbed during the week of this lesson so that you can draw from life and not the photo.

  • Assignment 1: Using your arranged composition, create 6 thumbnails from different station points (position) and eye levels.

Each thumbnail will be 2"x3" and either horizontal or vertical. Draw using line only. Scan and submit. In your group discussion board, identify the two best line thumbnails and be prepared to explain why you chose them.

  • Assignment 2: Add value and texture to each of your thumbnail compositions. Scan and submit. In your group discussion board, identity your two most effective shaded compositions and explain why you chose them. Are they different than the two favorite line thumbnails? If so, why?

Size: 9"x12"

Media: Graphite or Charcoal.

Deadlines

Post your thumbnail line and shaded/texture drawings by Wednesday at 11:55 PM. Scan in and submit your thumbnail drawings to the discussion board.

Notice: This an atypical deadline to allow more time on the final assignment.

Provide feedback by Thursday by 11:55 PM: Provide feedback to members of the class. The instructor will also provide general feedback as needed. In your feedback, answer the following questions:

  • Which compositions are best and why?
  • Do you agree with the top two suggestions?
  • Are the drawings in proportion? Are the volumes correct?
  • Make suggestions for improvement.
