Week 3: Proportion

Plumb Line Tutorials: Looking for Size

Information presented in the video tutorials Simple Design, Vase and Cube will help you learn to draw objects in proportion. As you carefully follow these procedures, you will learn how to find and record key landmarks of size, position, and angle.

The information covered in this lesson will be extremely useful as you draw using other printed images and three-dimensional objects. You should apply these principles whenever you draw an object.

Perfect proportion is discovered by identifying size, position, and angle of key landmarks of the object, such as height and width, corners, outlines, vanishing point angles, etc. These should be discovered and accurately recorded on your drawing.

Your foremost task to achieve accurate proportion is to compare size, position, and angle of key landmarks on your drawing with the same landmarks on the actual object—compare them again and again.

The video tutorials will make use of plumb lines to discover and record size, position, and angle of key landmarks. (Tutorials are located under "Assignments: Negative Space and Perspective" in the menu at right).
