Assignment: Charcoal Composition and Thumbnails
Specifications
Subject matter: Use one or more of the following photos as your subject. It would be helpful to print the photo(s), but you may use the image on your computer screen as a reference. Click on the thumbnail to view the larger picture.
-
Assignment 1 Step 1: Using the photographs provided, with the principles of design that you’ve learned, create 8 different thumbnail compositions. As you set up your compositions, be especially aware to avoid "tangents" (see this tutorial on avoiding tangents).
-
NOTE: These still life set-ups are not good compositions. It is essential that you improve the composition by changing the size and/or placement of the objects, and/or cropping the borders. I will grade you down if you do nothing more than just copy the photo.
Each thumbnail will be 2"x3" and either horizontal or vertical. Draw using line only. Scan and submit.
-
Assignment 1 Step 2: Add value and texture to each of your thumbnail compositions using charcoal. Scan and submit. In your group discussion board, identify your two most effective compositions and explain why you chose them.
Media: Thumbnails—Graphite
Final 9"x12" —
Charcoal
Note: You will shade your thumbnails using graphite, but your final 9"x12" drawing will be with charcoal
