2. Principles of Design: Identify and correctly apply the principles of design to a variety of design problems.
3. Craftsmanship: Demonstrate craftmanship and production skills within the guidelines provided for each assignment.
4. Typography: Create balanced and clear typographic hierarchy and develop consistent typographic paragraph and character styles.
5. Image Creation: Use available methods and skills to create aesthetically professional, production-quality images.
6. Client and Team Skills: Experience the design process within group design and client meetings.
7. Critical Eye: Identify weaknesses in peer design work and articulate potential solutions.
8. Gain a deeper appreciation for and desire to connect everything in life with the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Prior to taking this course, each student should take Art 130 Introduction to Graphic Design and Art 230 Typography. It is expected that each student has a good grasp of the objectives of Art 130 and Art 230. Art 130 and Art 230 must be completed prior to beginning Art 235 and cannot be taken simultaneously.
There are five major projects in the semester. For more detailed instructions, see the individual project pages (using the “Projects” link in the upper right corner of this page).
A process post documents your daily progress as you proceed through the project. These posts serve three purposes: documenting your process, pondering your learning experience, and learning how to write and design a blog post.
Behance is a professional network for visual artists. Sign up for a free account (if you do not already have one) at the beginning of the semester. Complete a Behance post for the final on each project. This will help you get started creating an online portfolio. Then, post a link in a blog post to your images on Behance with the rest of the Final Project Submission; this is what will be used for grading.
Near the beginning of each process workbook, you will create a portfolio spread. It is intended to show the finished project in its best light. At the end of the course, you could collect these spreads together for a printed or PDF portfolio.
Use all of your typographic and design skills to design the spread to be engaging and informative.
The spread should contain all of the information necessary to stand on its own. Your name, contact information, and a short written presentation should be included. Use all of your typographic and design skills to design the spread to be engaging and informative.
Throughout this course, you will have many opportunities to provide feedback to your class members using WordPress. Your feedback should follow a rubric, which will be provided for each peer review assignment.
Please keep all feedback constructive and professional. With the Learning Model in mind, peer reviews are your oppourtunites to teach one another by offering suggestions to improve your and others’ work.
You should only participate in the peer review process once you have submitted your link for that step. There will be a deadline for completing the peer review.
The instructor will also review your project. Both the instructor and peer comments and ratings will be available for you to see.
Each project will have a final critique. Following the critique, you will have 24 hours to respond to suggestions and complete the project documentation pages.
Your final grade will include the following:
In addition, major projects will be assessed based on the following criteria:
Notes: Most feedback provided to the students will include only pass/fail. Only the final assignments are graded by the instructor.
Learning to present and sell your design work is a skill that is developed by making presentations. At the end of each of the projects, students will be expected to make an audiovisual presentation to explain their work. The presentations should show the steps taken to get to the final piece, be voice narrated, and may not exceed two (2) minutes in duration. Students are free to use any means to create the presentation, but we have included below instructions for the most common way to put the presentations together. The presentation should show the work in it's best light. In order to focus on the work and not the production value of the presentation, here are some guidelines to follow when making the AV presentation.
Students can download two pieces of software for this course. Both are available for free, and students will not need the professional versions for this course. The first, Jing, is an interactive video studio which allows students to create movies from their screen and record audio. The free software (not the professional version) is available at the following site: http://www.techsmith.com/jing.html To download the software, click the link on this page and then select the operating system in use (Mac or Windows) and select the Save File option from the download menu, and continue with the installation. If you need further help, you can find Jing tutorial videos online.
Screencast.com allows students to upload their videos online and to send the link of their videos and projects to the teacher and the rest of the class. The free account for this service (once again, not the professional) is available at the following site: http://www.screencast.com/
Once you arrive at this site, enter the necessary information (email, a password for the site, a name to display to viewers, and your country). You will then be sent to your email to verify the address given. If you need help, view this explanation on how to upload Jing videos onto Screencast.com (you will also find a list of further tutorials at this page).
Reading quizzes will be posted in our class I-Learn site. These will be available between specific lessons to ensure that you are prepared to participate in group discussions. The quizzes are not difficult and are written on the premise that you have taken the time to read and understand the material.
The first textbook for the course is How To Get Ideas by Jack Foster. The book is reasonably priced ($20.95) and is available in the University Bookstore as well as online bookstores. It is a great text for anyone interested in the art of graphic design, and many students choose to keep it for their personal library. The text is required and you will need it by the beginning of Week 2. It will be used over the course of the semester. Here is the link to the University Bookstore: http://www.byuistore.com/c-260-i-compare.aspx Here is the link to Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/How-Get-Ideas-Jack-Foster/dp/1576754308
The second textbook for the course is Design Professionalism by Andy Rutledge. Links to read the book are already provided in the course lessons. However, if you wish to read Design Professionalism on your iPad or Kindle, you will need to buy the ebook version at this site: http://designprofessionalism.com/
Occurrences of plagiarism, copyright violations, or other forms of deception are not acceptable in this class. If any of these things occur, it will result in failure of the course and likely suspension from the University.
BYU-Idaho is committed to providing a working and learning atmosphere which reasonably accommodates qualified persons with disabilities. If you have any disability which may impair your ability to complete this course successfully, please contact the Services for Students with Disabilities Office, 208-496-4271. Reasonable academic accommodations are reviewed for all students who have qualified, documented disabilities. Services are coordinated with the student and instructor by this office.
Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 prohibits sex discrimination against any participant in an education program or activity that receives federal funds, including Federal loans and grants. Title IX also covers student-to-student sexual harassment. If you encounter unlawful sexual harassment or gender-based discrimination, please contact the Personnel Office at 208-496-1130.
As the semester progresses, we reserve the right to make changes to the syllabus to better fit the needs of the class.
