INTRODUCTION:

Welcome to Art 110! My name is Tim Tanner and I will be your course Instructor. You'll learn more about me, my contact info, etc. in the "Instructor/Class" tab in a bit. For now, let me tell you a little bit about this 110 Art Course.

Obviously, you can tell from the title that we'll be learning about Basic Perspective. Perspective is one of the most important things that you will learn as an artist. Here's how one author stated the importance of this concept:

Every form, from a grain of sand to a mountain, exists in perspective. It is the first thing a student must learn. Like the alphabet in a language, without it, one would not be able to write. Too many students by-pass this phase of learning. The knowledge of perspective makes it possible to create the illusion that objects and figures are three dimensional on a two dimensional surface such as a sheet of paper, canvas or wall.*

The main objective of this course is to make you familiar with and capable of using perspective in your drawings and paintings. So let's get started:

How to begin this course:

You will begin this course by first progressing through all of the tabs at the top of the page. After you have read through all of the top tabs, you can progress through the Modules according to the schedule (located in "Course Pattern"). During each Module, you will have one or more "deliverable" assignments that you will be working towards. You will learn more about these in the tab marked "Course Pattern". Your deliverables for this Introduction to the course will be two items:

After reading through the tabs, do the following:

Part one:
  1. Navigate to the Google-Doc in the "Instructor/Class" tab.
  2. Add an introduction to yourself and a photograph. Size the photo to 300px wide.
  3. Find something that you have in common with at least 3 other students (besides being artists) and make comments to them.
Part Two:
  1. On an 8 1/2" x 11" sheet of paper, do a drawing in perspective, using whatever knowledge you currently have about perspective. Don't worry if you know nothing - just do the best you can. This will allow me to evaluate the needs of the class. Do not do any shading! This will be a formative assessment activity.
  2. Create your own Google-doc. Scan your drawing and paste it into your Google-doc. Name your document like this: "John Doe, Intro Drawing". Make comments about how you would assess yourself regarding perspective abilities.
  3. After making sure to click on the setting "anyone with the link can comment", share the URL to your Google-doc with the class HERE . (This is a different location than the Introduction above).

The two activities above will let you become aquainted with one another, and prepare you for posting all of your assignments.
