Test yourself to see if you are a Supertaster:

a. For this activity you will need some blue or green blue food coloring, a piece of paper with a 7mm (or .28")-wide hole punched through it (about the size of a punched hole for paper fitting in a three ring binder). So if you need to, just take a piece of paper from a three ring binder and tear off a small piece that contains the hole.

b. Swab some of the food coloring onto the front of your tongue. The tongue will take up the dye, but the papillae, tiny structures that house the taste buds, will stay pink (WARNING, a lot of food coloring will color the papillae as well, so don't use a ton). If this happens, scrape your tongue vigorously across the top of your mouth and this will help the papillae show up more pink - OR - you may use a piece of glass (don't cut your tongue!) to press on your tongue and this will make the papillae show up more pink. Place the 7mm hole over an area that you see a lot of papillae and count how many pink dots are inside the hole. Fewer than 5 papillae mean you are an insensitive "under-taster", between 15 and 30 indicates an average "taster" and over 30 papillae then you are a likely "super-taster". You may need someone to help you do this experiment as it is not always easy to do on your own.

c. Another easy test that you can do at home is called "The Saccharin Test": Mix one pack of saccharin (Sweet'N Low) into two-thirds of a cup of water. Now taste the water. You'll probably taste a mix of both bitter and sweet, but focus on which taste is stronger. If the sweet taste is dominant, it means you're probably an undertaster. If bitter is the dominant taste, it means you're probably a supertaster. If it's a tie, you are in the half of the population of regular tasters, so don't sweat it. Surely, you may have to do the test more than once to tease out differences.
